System Shock VR Announced For Quest, PSVR2 and PC VR Headsets

Flat2VR Studios brings the iconic immersive sim to VR across all major platforms including Meta Quest and PlayStation VR2.

System Shock VR Announced For Quest, PSVR2 and PC VR Headsets

Right, this is a pleasant surprise – System Shock is getting the full VR treatment, and it's coming to pretty much every headset that matters. Flat2VR Studios dropped the announcement during today's VR Games Showcase, confirming that System Shock VR is heading to Meta Quest 3, PlayStation VR2, and PC VR via SteamVR. For those keeping track, Flat2VR are the same folks behind the Metro Awakening VR port, so they've got form when it comes to bringing flatscreen games into proper VR.

System Shock is a bit of a legendary name in gaming – the original 1994 title basically invented the immersive sim genre alongside games like Thief, and its influence can be seen everywhere from BioShock to Prey. The 2023 remake from Nightdive Studios did a brilliant job of modernising the experience whilst keeping that oppressive atmosphere intact, so the prospect of exploring Citadel Station in VR is genuinely exciting. You'll be hacking systems, managing your inventory, and trying not to get murdered by SHODAN's various minions, all whilst fully immersed in that claustrophobic sci-fi horror setting.

What We Know So Far

Details are still a bit thin on the ground, but the announcement confirms it's coming to all three major VR platforms. That's brilliant news for accessibility – whether you're on Oculus Quest 2, the latest Quest 3, PSVR2, or any PC VR headset, you'll be able to play this. No word yet on a release date or price, but given Flat2VR's track record, I'm cautiously optimistic they'll do the conversion justice. The big question is how they'll handle the UI and inventory systems in VR – System Shock has always been quite menu-heavy, which can be a right faff in VR if not done properly.

Why This Matters

Here's the thing – we're seeing more studios take VR conversions seriously, and that's exactly what the platform needs right now. Whilst original VR titles are obviously important, bringing beloved franchises into VR helps grow the player base and gives people who might be on the fence about VR a compelling reason to jump in. System Shock is the sort of game that could genuinely shine in VR – the first-person perspective, the emphasis on environmental storytelling, the cyberpunk atmosphere. It's all there. And with Flat2VR handling the port rather than some random mobile dev, there's a decent chance this won't be a lazy conversion but a proper, thoughtful adaptation that makes use of VR's strengths. Fingers crossed we get more details soon, because this could be a proper highlight for VR in 2025.
