Snap Axes 1,000 Jobs While Going All-In on AR Glasses
Snapchat's parent company cuts staff by 1,000 while doubling down on AR hardware through new Qualcomm partnership.

Right, so Snap's having one of those classic tech company moments – laying off roughly 1,000 people while simultaneously announcing they're pushing harder into AR glasses. Bit awkward, that.
The company's confirmed the redundancies are part of a major restructuring, which is corporate speak for 'we're focusing on different stuff now'. And that different stuff is augmented reality hardware. Snap's created a new XR subsidiary called Specs Inc, which has just signed a multi-year deal with Qualcomm to provide the chip tech for their upcoming AR glasses.
Putting All Their Eggs in the AR Basket
It's a proper pivot, this. Snap's essentially betting its future on AR spectacles becoming a thing, which is bold considering how Meta's stumbled with similar ambitions and how their own previous Spectacles attempts never really set the world on fire. The Qualcomm partnership is significant though – they know their stuff when it comes to mobile chips, and if anyone can make lightweight AR glasses that don't run out of battery in 20 minutes, it's probably them.
Tough Times for Those Affected
Still, it's rough for the thousand people losing their jobs. These restructuring announcements always paint it as necessary for the 'future of the company', but that's cold comfort when you're suddenly job hunting. Snap's been struggling to compete with TikTok and keep investors happy, so I suppose this was coming. Whether AR glasses are actually the answer to their problems remains to be seen – the market's still pretty niche, and consumer appetite for face computers isn't exactly proven yet.
Time will tell if this gamble pays off, but for now, Snap's making it clear: they're serious about AR, even if it means significant pain in the short term.
